Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham Announces Partnership with Texas A&M and Texas Farm Bureau to Empower Future Texas Farmers
AUSTIN, Texas— Today, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., is excited to announce that the Texas General Land Office (GLO) is partnering with Texas A&M University and the Texas Farm Bureau to develop opportunities for the next generation of Texas farmers and ranchers.
Through this partnership, the GLO will identify appropriate state land and work with agricultural organizations like Texas A&M and Texas Farm Bureau to provide next generation farmers with hands-on training, mentorship from experienced producers, and a pathway towards farming or ranching.
“Food security is national security, and that security starts with making sure we have the people and the land needed to produce the food our families depend on,” said Commissioner Buckingham. “The number of farms in America is declining, our agricultural workforce is getting older, and we must prepare today for who will feed Texas tomorrow. This partnership is about putting Texas land to work and giving the next generation of producers a pathway into agriculture. I want to thank Texas A&M and Texas Farm Bureau for their help making this concept a reality, I couldn’t think of more qualified organizations to partner with.”

The Texas Engine: Fueled, Fed, and Fortified is Commissioner Buckingham's vision for putting Texas’s land and natural resources to work to strengthen our state today and to secure America’s future.
“Texas Farm Bureau looks forward to working with Commissioner Buckingham on this important initiative," said Texas Farm Bureau President Russell Boening. "Helping the next generation enter agriculture is critical to the future of farming, ranching and rural communities across Texas, and we appreciate the Commissioner’s leadership in bringing partners together to explore new opportunities.”
As a continuation of The GLO’s Texas Engine Initiative, this partnership will focus on the importance of supporting the American farmer while ensuring food security in the United States. This working group, composed of experts from various forms of the agriculture industry from around the state, will not only provide hands-on training but will work together and continue to explore more ways in which the GLO can provide access of state land to producers while generating revenue for the Permanent School Fund.
The GLO manages more than 13 million acres of Texas state land, including agricultural land leased for grazing and farming. Revenue generated through the responsible management of state lands contributes to the Permanent School Fund, supporting public education in Texas.
Texas A&M University will bring its unmatched agricultural research, education, and extension expertise to the partnership, helping participants develop practical skills and learn from experienced producers. Additionally, in collaborating with the Texas Farm Bureau, the GLO will be able to provide information on upcoming land leases to its members, expanding the opportunities for young farmers to secure the future of Texas agriculture.
