Senator Pérez issues statement on release of report examining official response to the Eaton and Palisades…

SACRAMENTO – Senator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) issued the following statement on the release of a report by the UL Research Institutes’ Fire Safety Research Institute into the January 2025 Los Angeles County fires:

“While we have already heard many of the difficult details into the official response to the January 2025 Los Angeles County fires, this report provides critical confirmation and documentation. In the case of the Eaton Fire, we know that vital communication in the immediate hours after the fire’s ignition were not relayed to fire commanders. As a result, evacuation notices were not issued until hours later in west Altadena. This working-class neighborhood with its historically Black and brown residents suffered 18 of the fire’s 19 deaths.

“For this report to have value, it must lead to significant changes in how our emergency management and public safety workers respond and coordinate. Devastating and deadly fires have become too common in California. We must develop updated and coordinated systems, invest in resources, and conduct comprehensive training to refine our response skills.

“The community of Altadena which I represent is still in the early stages of recovery. We owe it to them, all fire survivors and every Californian to let this report be the catalyst to do better to protect our people.”
