Expanding School Choice Nationwide

Today, Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) celebrated the Trump administration’s latest action to implement the Education Freedom Tax Credit, the first nationwide school choice program in American history.

“Parents know their children best, and they deserve the freedom to choose the education that works best for their family,” said Chairman Walberg. “The Education Freedom Tax Credit will give millions of families more options and more control over their children’s education, regardless of their ZIP code or income. Today’s announcement is another major step toward putting parents back in the driver’s seat and putting students—not Washington bureaucrats—first. I applaud President Trump, Secretary Bessent, and Secretary McMahon for continuing to deliver on their promise to expand education freedom across the country.”

Background:
Beginning in 2027, Americans can receive a tax credit of up to $1,700 per taxpayer (including $3,400 for married couples) for donations that fund K-12 scholarships, helping families pay for tuition, tutoring, special-needs services, and other education expenses. Thirty-one states have already opted in, and the program could support as many as 2.2 million scholarships annually by 2030.

The Education Freedom Tax Credit builds on the Committee’s longstanding work to expand school choice and give parents more say in their children’s education.
