Get to know the Mesa County Workforce Development Board

The Mesa County Workforce Center (MCWFC), 512 29 ½ Road, is highlighting the important role of its Workforce Development Board and the board members who help guide workforce initiatives throughout the community.

In Mesa County, the Workforce Development Board is a group of prominent business, education, economic development and community leaders who help guide the workforce development strategies at the Workforce Center. The board’s role is advisory and helps shape how local employers and job seekers connect, grow and succeed as it relates to workforce development.

Across the state, there are 10 federally recognized local workforce areas. Each has its own centers dedicated to helping job seekers prepare for and connect with meaningful employment while linking employers with the skilled talent they need. Each is anchored by a workforce development board that ensures those services reflect both the needs of businesses and the aspirations of the people they serve.

The Board’s work is rooted in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), signed into law in 2014. Under this framework, workforce development boards act as strategic conveners, who bring together voices from business, local government, education and economic development. In practice, this means aligning different sectors so they can collaborate on solutions that serve employers and job seekers well.

During its recent meeting, the Board recognized outgoing leaders and elected new officers. The board thanked Karen Troester for her service as previous Board Chair and member as she concluded her term, recognized Alma Sekulich for her leadership as Board Chair last year, and elected Brian Young as Chair and Darla Fortner as Vice Chair.

“Anchored in collaboration and strategic leadership, the Workforce Development Board plays an essential role in shaping Mesa County’s economic success,” says Mesa County Workforce Center Director Heather Nara. “By bringing together leaders from business, education, government and community organizations, the Board helps ensure our workforce strategies align with employer needs while also creating opportunities for job seekers."

The Board is pleased to invite local businesses to a Skills-First Talent Development Training it is hosting from 8 a.m. til noon on Sept. 21st at the Workforce Center. This training will equip your leadership to adopt a skills-first approach for recruiting and retaining talent in your organization. Details can be found here.
