DR Congo Rules Out School Closures Despite Ebola Spread in E. Provinces
The current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which is concentrated in the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu. According to the World Health Organization, the strain has a fatality rate ranging between 30% and 50% among confirmed cases.
Speaking in the provincial capital of Bunia, Health Minister Roger Kamba said the government's focus is on reinforcing health precautions in schools rather than suspending classes.
“We are not going to close schools. We are going to put in place preventive measures so as not to punish children twice,” he told reporters.
Kamba expressed concern over the deaths of at least five schoolchildren in Ituri province, attributing the fatalities to self-medication and delays in seeking professional medical treatment.
He urged families to avoid treating suspected Ebola cases at home and instead seek immediate care at health facilities.
According to the latest figures cited from the WHO, at least 134 confirmed Ebola cases have been recorded during the current outbreak affecting both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.
