Family Files Lawsuit Against OpenAI Over School Shooting

(MENAFN) The family of a 12-year-old girl injured in a deadly school shooting in Canada has filed a lawsuit against the artificial intelligence company OpenAI, according to reports.

Cia Edmonds initiated the legal action in British Columbia (BC) Supreme Court on behalf of herself and her two daughters. Her daughter, Maya, suffered three gunshot wounds, including one above her left eye, resulting in permanent brain damage and lasting physical disabilities.

In late February, Canada’s AI minister reportedly summoned OpenAI representatives to Ottawa after it was revealed that the teenager responsible for the Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, mass shooting had been banned from ChatGPT months prior to the attack. The minister stated that Jesse Van Rootselaar’s account had been suspended in June for sharing troubling content, but the company did not notify authorities as no imminent threats were identified at the time.

Authorities reported that Van Rootselaar killed her mother and half-brother on February 10 before going to a local secondary school, where she shot dead five students and an educational assistant, ultimately taking her own life.

"Possessing vast amounts of harmful information and the technical ability to distil it, ChatGPT equipped the shooter with information, guidance and assistance to plan a mass casualty event," the lawsuit stated. The claim further argued that OpenAI was aware of the shooter’s disturbing exchanges with the ChatGPT chatbot months before the attack but failed to alert law enforcement.
