Canada Summons OpenAI After School Shooting

(MENAFN) Canada’s Evan Solomon called representatives from OpenAI to Ottawa following the Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, school shooting. Authorities reported that the 18-year-old perpetrator, Jesse Van Rootselaar, had been banned from ChatGPT in June after her account was flagged for concerning content but was not reported to police at the time, as no “credible or imminent threat” was identified.

Van Rootselaar killed her mother and half-brother on February 10 before opening fire at a secondary school, killing five students and an educational assistant, and subsequently taking her own life.

OpenAI confirmed it contacted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police after the attack and said senior leaders will travel to Ottawa to meet officials regarding safety measures and reporting thresholds. Minister Solomon stated he was “deeply disturbed” and requested a briefing on the company’s escalation policies, noting that regulation of AI chatbots remains under consideration.
