Gunmen Storm School in Thailand

(MENAFN) At least two individuals sustained serious injuries after gunmen stormed a school in southern Hat Yai, located in Thailand's Songkhla province, according to local reports.

An unspecified number of attackers reportedly took multiple teachers and students hostage, media reported.

As of 5:36 p.m. (1036 GMT), the school director and one student were confirmed to be seriously injured, according to media.

A teacher who was shot has been transported to the hospital, the Mae Taptim Yala Foundation said.

The assault took place at Phatong Pradhan Siriwat School, the foundation noted on its page on the US social media platform Facebook. It added that “two gunshots were heard at the site.”

Police indicated that the attackers entered the school just as classes were ending for the day, and authorities fear that many frightened students remain trapped inside the building.

Law enforcement officers are currently on the scene, managing the situation.
