Clearwater Community Volunteers Gives Pinellas PAL 13,000 Reasons to Continue Helping Children

eil Brickfield of the Pinellas Sheriff’s PAL received a $13,000 donation from staff and volunteers of the Clearwater Community Volunteers Center and the Church of Scientology FSO representatives.

CCV’s support means PAL can continue to go above and beyond our core mission of afterschool homework help and mentoring programming to meet our children’s biggest needs.”

— Neil Brickfield, ED Pinellas County Sheriff's PAL

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, USA, August 22, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — On Wednesday, August 15th, Neil Brickfield, Executive Director of Pinellas County Sheriff’s Police Athletic League (PAL), was presented a check for over $13,000 by the Clearwater Community Volunteers (CCV) to help fund youth programs at PAL in Lealman. The funds were raised from the 7th Annual Chefs’ Showcase sponsored by the Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization in June of this year.

“The Clearwater Community Volunteers are a great community partner,” said Brickfield. “They help PAL to have the resources to meet the needs of our PAL participants; from pens for school to sneakers for play to a warm sweatshirt or glasses to help them read. CCV’s support means PAL can continue to go above and beyond our core mission of afterschool homework help and mentoring programming to meet our children’s biggest needs.”

Lealman is a low income neighborhood in the City of St. Petersburg. It suffers from a higher than average crime rate than the surrounding areas. PAL, located at the Lealman PAL Sports Complex, provides a safe environment where hundreds of at-risk youth from 6th to 12th grade can receive mentorship, academics, an even meals while participating in the programs.

Soltero said, “One of the first things Mr. Brickfield told us when he came to the center was the story of two young girls who are now able to go to college because of the community’s support of PAL. This is an example of why we help.”

More information about the PAL program can be found by visiting their website at www.pinellaspal.com.

To find out more information about the Clearwater Community Volunteers or the CCV Center please call Michael Soltero at (727) 316-5309 or email ccvdirector@ccvfl.org.

Foundation for a Drug-Free World Urges Parents to Educate Themselves about Marijuana and its Mind-Altering Drug THC

Kids are encouraged to sign the Drug-Free Pledge in the Foundation for a Drug-Free World information center in downtown Clearwater.

The most common overdose incidents in children occur when the drug has been combined with food in an "edible" form of marijuana. ”

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, USA, August 22, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — With the push from marijuana advocates to legalize marijuana in Florida, FDFW is urging parents to find out the facts and the effects of this mind-altering drug and concerned mothers and volunteers of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World (FDFW) distributed hundreds of the “Truth About Marijuana” information booklets to other parents this past weekend in Clearwater.

“THC is the drug in marijuana that causes a high. A ‘God-given’ marijuana plant contains about 1-2% THC,” said Joanna Young, a mother and founder of Drug Addiction Help Line, who has helped educate hundreds of parents about drugs. “Marijuana is now being genetically modified by man to contain 12-25% THC and sometimes higher, this is far from God-given and has resulted in increased number of cases of psychosis in marijuana users.”

In March 2019, emergency room records from UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital showed a three-fold increase in marijuana cases since the state first allowed recreational marijuana in January 2014. ER visits for marijuana-caused symptoms include repeated vomiting, racing heart and psychotic episodes. [i]

Andrew Monte of UC Health said, “… with marijuana’s increased availability and higher THC concentrations, we may be seeing more adverse drug reactions.”

Another recent study found that people who smoked strong marijuana on a daily basis were three times more likely to be diagnosed with psychosis compared with people who never used the drug. Intoxication and heart problems were other common complaints in the Colorado hospital study.[ii]

“Marijuana edibles, which include candies, chocolate, cookies and chips (just to name a few) very often have high THC content and are packaged to resemble sweets familiar to kids, which is extremely dangerous and irresponsible. Children have been hospitalized from THC edibles.” Ms. Young said.

Information from the Children’s Hospital Colorado website states:

“The most common overdose incidents in children occur when the drug has been combined with food in an "edible" form of marijuana. This is because marijuana ingested in this manner can have a stronger and prolonged effect, especially in children under the age of 12 years old.

“In these instances, kids mistake ‘edible’ marijuana (like gummy bears, brownies, lollipops, etc.) for regular food and eat it unknowingly. Small children are at higher risk based on their size and weight. Because edible products have very high amounts of marijuana, the symptoms are more severe on a small child. Many young children who consume marijuana edibles require hospital admission due to the severity of their symptoms.”

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World urges the public to get the real facts and not blindly follow what the “drug pushers” who will benefit from the users, have to say.

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World provides free education materials to anyone. Their materials include 14 different information booklets on the most commonly abused drugs and a documentary DVD: “Real People Real Stories.” To get more information, copies of the booklets or the documentary DVD, visit www.drugfreeworld.org

The Church of Scientology is a sponsor of the program making it possible for the Foundation to provide educational materials at no cost to educators, law enforcement and the community.
