Call For Radical Reform Of A Troubled Catholic Church

This observation leads to Moran’s most general, but perhaps also his most important point: the institutional Church must rethink what it means by “teaching.”

NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, September 29, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — A book, Missed Opportunities:Rethinking Catholic Tradition by prolific author Gabriel Moran offers detailed criticism of the Roman Catholic Church and proposes radical reforms of that church. Moran has been writing on the strengths and weaknesses of the church since before the Second Vatican Council. The present book challenges the language and structure of the church as well as the basis of its moral teaching. Each of the chapters on topics that include contraception, abortion, homosexuality, euthanasia, the environment, and human rights is argued from a knowledge of the church’s own tradition in light of contemporary experience.

The Roman Catholic Church has been in free fall in the United States and Europe. Tens of millions of people have drifted away, not usually because they were attracted to something better, but because church officials speak a language that seems irrelevant. Pope Francis was able to awaken the interest of a surprisingly large number of people. He has changed the face of the official church mainly by gestures, symbols and provocative comments. He is unwilling or unable to pursue the kind of doctrinal change that is needed, especially on sexual issues. He does not seem to grasp the extent and the seriousness of a women’s movement worldwide.

The clergy abuse scandal, the author claims, was predictable fifty years ago when the aborted reforms of the Second Vatican Council left all power with the clergy while the support and protections of individual clergymen disappeared. Today the only way to end clericalism is to eliminate a clerical class. Priesthood is not tied to a clergy/lay division which runs counter to the church’s original vision of itself as a community of communities. Pope Francis has called a meeting of the leading bishops in the world to discuss the clergy scandal. Bishops talking only to other bishops are not likely to grasp the extent of the problem or know what to do about it.

The chapter on abortion offers a different argument beyond the useless opposition of pro-life vs. pro-choice. The author claims to be the traditionalist in following Augustine, Thomas Aquinas and the long history of the church’s teaching that early abortions are not homicide. The bishops in the 1970s, after nearly all church members rejected the official teaching on contraception, decided to take an absolute stand on abortion. They ceased talking about when a person comes into existence and started talking about “life.” Their stand is in opposition to most of the church’s tradition. The refusal to enter into any dialogue has been a self-defeating strategy. If the aim is to reduce the number of abortions the one policy that has proven to be effective is an easy access to contraceptives.

Author Gabriel Moran says that his aim in this book, as in previous books, is to open a better conversation on disputed topics. How a question is formulated determines the possible answers to the question. The Roman Catholic Church is sharply divided which makes fruitful discussions and debates nearly impossible. Missed Opportunities is an earnest attempt to find a new path that is both consistent with the long tradition of the church while genuinely confronting today’s questions.

A source involved in the investigation has confirmed to the plaintiff, David Howe, that the case-number information from the Lee County Port Authority Police Investigation (Case No. 2016000055203) and the Lee Clerk of Court (Case No. 18-SC-001768) would be provided to a field agent from the FBI, Baltimore, following a review with law-enforcement professionals in Maryland.

The independent Lee County Port Authority Police investigation and its fact-finding report including sworn witness statements were repeatedly and aggressively objected to in the small claim hearing by counsel for Enterprise Holdings' National Car Rental; under no circumstance would Enterprise Holdings Counsel allow Judge Archie B. Hayward to read one word from the independent and unbiased police investigation. It begs the question for every single reasonable person everywhere: "Why would an ethical rental agency so aggressively and so persistently suppress a comprehensive, unbiased and independent, police investigation? Why did EHI Counsel insist that Judge Hayward be kept ignorant and uninformed to the findings of a sworn law enforcement officer from the same community the Judge presides concerning facts and evidence to reach the truth of a matter? After all, what's the point of a 'small claim' courtroom if the merits, facts, and truth of a case are trumped by the unfair advantage of a cadre of lawyers against a pro-se plaintiff in a Lee Court where counsel for the plaintiff was unattainable because EHI intentionally forced the case into the wrong court of law through adhesion contracts — a contract that apparently wasn't signed by the plaintiff-victim as now evidenced by exhibits docketed in Lee County, Howe vs. Enterprise Holdings.

For the record, Plaintiff Howe filed a motion to transfer the case to an appropriate court of jurisdiction where due process could be obtained for this complex civil case but, as the court transcript now proves, Enterprise Counsel strongly objected to this effort for fairness, equity, and truth. Remarkably — and an urgent issue for review by the Florida Bar, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, and the Florida Supreme Court — concerning equity and due-process of law in a small claim hearing in the state of Florida, Judge Archie B. Hayward never read a single word from the independent police investigation docketed prior to trial and provided to defense Counsel.

And Judge Archie B. Hayward never heard or saw a single item of audio and video evidence from the same evidence previously docketed and sent electronically to Counsel — as directly instructed by EHI Counsel prior to trial except for the relentless money demand which also exposed proof of video surveillance viewed by EHI manager that was later taped-over.

To reiterate, the critical video evidence for which the state of Florida provides duties to safeguard and which would have unequivocally determined the pre-exising minor 'wear and tear' was, conveniently, erased after police and victim demanded the evidence. And the manager claimed he just didn't know better to copy, duplicate, and safeguard this incredibly significant evidence.

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, USA, September 27, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — On Saturday September 15, socially-minded people from across the Tampa Bay area converged in Downtown Clearwater for the inaugural Tampa Bay Humanitarian Film Festival. With 33 films screening in the time span of only 5 hours, guests were able to watch films that suited their interests.

Sponsored by the Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization, along with United for Human Rights Florida Chapter, the Way to Happiness Association of Tampa Bay, the Florida Chapter of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World and others, films were screened in nine different humanitarian centers along North Fort Harrison Avenue.

These films included the award-winning short films “Two Strangers Who Meet Five Time” by Marcus Markou and “A Little Pause” by Ayesha Jhukla. Feature films screened included “Time Simply Passes”, a documentary about James Richardson, the Florida man wrongly imprisoned for twenty years and “Drug Addiction In America,” a documentary of how the opioid crisis hit a West Virginia town with a vengeance.

“We had excellent feedback from those who attended,” said event organizer Lisa Mansell. “We are definitely looking at doing this festival again. For the most part, the filmmakers who screened their films here were not parishioners, but they share a desire to see social issues brought front and center. Film is a powerful medium to communicate the human condition and raise awareness.”

An attending pastor commented “I have to say that the movies were very inspiring. The message gives you a sense of why you should appreciate others and help one another.”

The Humanitarian program Centers, located along N. Fort Harrison Ave. between Cleveland and Drew Streets, house the social betterment and humanitarian programs supported by the Church of Scientology. Non-religious in nature, these non-profit organizations offer resources to help tackle global issues like drug abuse, human trafficking and psychiatric abuse to declining moral values.
