Maureen Sheeran, NCJFCJ Chief Program Officer, Announces Retirement

The NCJFCJ is the Nation’s Oldest Judicial Membership Organization

Maureen “Mo” Sheeran, chief program officer for family violence and domestic relations programs at the NCJFCJ, has announced her retirement.

From a time when domestic violence was barely understood, Mo grew the NCJFCJ to its stature as the preeminent leader in the country.”

— Honorable Susan B. Carbon, New Hampshire Circuit Court

RENO, NV, UNITED STATES, July 31, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — (Reno, Nev.) – Maureen “Mo” Sheeran, chief program officer for family violence and domestic relations programs at the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ), has announced her retirement from the organization as of August 15.

Sheeran has been a leader in domestic violence prevention and services for more than 30 years. She has significantly contributed to the NCJFCJ’s efforts to improve judicial response to domestic violence, and to improve outcomes for victims of domestic violence and their children involved in the family court and dependency systems. Since assisting in the establishment of the Resource Center on Domestic Violence: Child Protection and Custody in 1994, she has spearheaded initiatives to design more effective approaches to working with battered women and their children.

“From a time when domestic violence was barely understood, Mo grew the NCJFCJ to its stature as the preeminent leader in the country,” said the Honorable Susan B. Carbon of New Hampshire Circuit Court and past president of the NCJFCJ. “She has grown and cultivated a staff that share her drive and dedication. Her energy and passion are infectious. Every life she touches is made better because of it. I am one of the fortunate beneficiaries of the privilege of knowing and working with Mo for the past 22 years.”

She has provided leadership nationally on supervised visitation and exchange services that account for domestic violence. She also serves in an advisory capacity for numerous organizations, focusing on collaborative efforts that harness the resources and expertise of various professionals and organizations to achieve safe and just outcomes. She has developed a myriad of groundbreaking judicial curriculum at national conferences on domestic violence. During her tenure with the NCJFCJ, she has overseen more than $50 million in federally funded grant projects; served as an advisor for many organizations; and developed national conference curriculums on such issues as full faith and credit, firearms and domestic violence, and effective interventions in domestic violence and child maltreatment cases.

“Mo has a great ability to work and build relationships with government agencies, domestic violence advocates, other organizations, and judges,” said the Honorable Dale Koch (Ret.) of Multnomah County, Ore. and past president of the NCJFCJ. “She is a problem solver, who is always working to find solutions, rather than create barriers to success. Mo will be greatly missed.”

Prior to joining the NCJFCJ 25 years ago, she provided direct services to victims of domestic violence and their children, and raised funds for client services for six years as the deputy director and development director for the Domestic Violence Resource Center (formerly CAAW, Committee to Aid Abused Women).

“Mo’s impact helped shape the work of the NCJFCJ,” said Joey Orduna Hastings, NCJFCJ CEO. “She has been a part of monumental legislative, policy, and technical assistance publications that will continue to influence judicial education in family violence and domestic relations matters in order to improve the lives of families and children who seek justice.”

About the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ):
Founded in 1937, the Reno, Nev.-based National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, is the nation’s oldest judicial membership organization and focused on improving the effectiveness of our nation’s juvenile and family courts. A leader in continuing education opportunities, research, and policy development in the field of juvenile and family justice, the 2,000-member organization is unique in providing practice-based resources to jurisdictions and communities nationwide.

THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA AND CUREMETRIX COLLABORATE ON NEXT-GENERATION AI FOR MEDICAL IMAGING

Dr. Anthony Mancuso, Professor and Chairman, Department of Radiology, University of Florida College of Medicine

This affiliation provides an opportunity to educate radiology residents on developments in using AI in medical imaging and its focus on advancement in the delivery of health care.”

— Dr. Anthony Mancuso

SAN DIEGO, CA, USA, July 31, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — CureMetrix®, a company developing investigational, physics-based artificial intelligence and deep-learning software to help radiologists achieve more accurate readings of breast images, signed an agreement with the University of Florida to collect five years of anonymized images and clinical data to continue developing best-in-class computer-aided detection (CAD) tools for mammographers. As part of the agreement, the University of Florida will be using the CureMetrix software in an educational and investigational setting to continue evaluating its impact.

“The key to developing the most effective artificial intelligence (AI) software lies in our ability to curate high-quality data to properly train and validate the algorithm. We are thrilled to have a collaboration with the university’s academic health center, which is at the forefront of clinical care to help us usher in the next era of AI products in medical imaging. Our goal continues to be to develop a CAD that works to improve outcomes for patients and hospitals,” stated Kevin Harris, Chief Executive Officer of CureMetrix.

The University of Florida is one of the nation’s top research universities and currently offers state-of-the-art technology in breast imaging.

“This affiliation provides an opportunity to educate radiology residents on developments in using AI in medical imaging and its focus on advancement in the delivery of health care. It is an exciting collaboration and has the potential to help us continue to maintain the highest standard of care possible as we aim to improve clinical efficiency and patient outcomes,” said Anthony Mancuso, M.D., a professor and chair of the Department of Radiology in the UF College of Medicine.

CureMetrix currently has two investigational products for digital mammography, cmAssist®, a physics-based CAD software that identifies and quantifies regions of interest and cmTriage™, a worklist sorting and optimization tool for the prioritization of studies based on suspicious regions of interest. The company is currently conducting clinical trials to submit both solutions to the FDA in upcoming months.

With data from the University of Florida, CureMetrix will continue developing a CAD software for 3D tomosynthesis.

For more information about how to collaborate with CureMetrix as a data partner or a clinical study site, please contact clinicalstudies@curemetrix.com or visit http://curemetrix.com/about/our-team/.

About CureMetrix
CureMetrix® was founded in 2014 on the belief that better medical image analysis technology could lead to better outcomes for breast cancer patients. The company is developing investigational, physics-based artificial intelligence and deep learning solutions to help radiologists achieve more accurate readings of breast images. Through its research partnerships with leading hospital radiology departments, CureMetrix has evaluated more than 500,000 mammogram images to identify potential false negatives, which are undiagnosed cancers, and false positives, which are unnecessary recalls of patients to review anomalies that turn out to be normal. False negatives can occur at a rate of about one in five breast cancers.1 False positives affect 7-12 percent of all women after an initial mammogram.2 Reducing false positives could save a significant portion of the $4 billion per year spent on unneeded and sometimes invasive procedures such as biopsies.3 More importantly, reducing false negatives could save lives as well as reduce the cost and difficulty of cancer treatment through early detection.

Our goal is to create CAD that Works®. Improving computer-aided detection through a robust physics-based algorithm for detecting cancer empowers radiologists, supports their patients and reduces costs while improving clinical outcomes. To learn more about CureMetrix, visit www.curemetrix.com.

Sean Juhl Explains the Difference between Sparkling and Plain Water

SARASOTA, FL, UNITED STATES, July 30, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — Sparkling water is hugely popular as of late, particularly because it comes in so many flavors and in such attractive packaging. Grocery stores all over the country now stock an array of flavored fizzy waters and this is generally a positive thing because it means that people drink more water and low-calorie drinks. However, Sean Juhl, a nutritional expert, explains that it is important that people understand the difference between plain water and fizzy water, and the difference between the various seltzers and sparkling waters as well.

Sean Juhl Explains why not all Water Is Created Equally

Sean Juhl first explains the difference between sparkling water and seltzer, which lies in the type of carbonation. Many drinks use artificial carbonation, which means they are club sodas or seltzers. The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) regulates these drinks in the same way as regular sodas. However, bubbles can also occur naturally, at the source of the drink itself, which is sparkling water. These drinks are regulated in the same way as bottled water rather than sodas.

However, he also explains that, whether sparkling or seltzer, people must properly read the nutritional label. That is because many brands now add things other than water and carbonation. Often, they also included added sugars and flavors, as well as citric acid.

Sean Juhl also looks at sparkling mineral water. This is like regular mineral water in as such that it comes from a source that is underground and that contains a range of minerals (manganese, magnesium, sodium, and/or calcium) in its natural forms. How much minerals are present varies between brands but they should always be natural rather than added. Mineral water is particularly hydrating because it contains sodium, which helps to rebuild the electrolytes lost when we sweat. Hence, it is an important drink for athletes or those who live in a hot climate. These waters contain only low levels of sodium so they do not cause any harm. However, those on a low salt diet should avoid mineral water altogether.

As Sean Juhl explains, the big question is whether or not carbonated waters hydrates. Thankfully, they do, just as plain water does. There are numerous sparkling water options available with delicious flavors that do not contain any sugars, which are just as good. However, it is important to read the label and thereby avoid added sugars.

Lastly, there are some reports that sparkling water is bad for the teeth. This is due to the carbon dioxide, which must create carbonic acids when it dissolves. As a result, these waters have a lower acidity level than tap water. However, it isn’t corrosive in the way soda is, although some flavors can be somewhat more corrosive depending on their source. Meanwhile, Dan also explains that there are people who have sensitive stomachs and they find that sparkling water leads to discomfort. They should avoid drinking it. Everyone else, however, can simply pick whichever one they prefer the most themselves.

Frank Lennix Discusses the Easiest Health Codes Which Kitchens Are Often Cited For

Find out what which easy kitchen health codes are often the root of a citation

SARASOTA, FL, UNITED STATES, July 30, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — When people think of a kitchen, often, they think of eating. Many might remember their favorite food or a family meal. If the person knows or is a chef themselves, their mind might wander to cooking a meal.

What people probably don’t think about is health code citations. Unfortunately, Frank Lennix has cooked up some of the most common, easily rectifiable health citations found in a kitchen. Lennix warns that these might be disturbing, and they certainly are gross, but they’re a reality for many restaurant kitchens.

General Cleanliness

Anyone who has ever worked with food, in any capacity, knows that keeping a workstation clean is rule number one. In the kitchen, cleanliness is next to Godliness. Yet, many of the people citations for kitchen related health risks are due to uncleanliness. The inspectors who are giving these citations are going to restaurants. At restaurants, people pay for a meal that is supposed to be made by a professional. Although, it’s difficult to call anyone who can’t even clean up after themselves much of an adult, let alone professional.

Chemical Use

Yes. Chemicals. Cleaning products are among the largest offenders. It's usually safe to assume people aren’t cooking with chemicals. Although while cleaning, sometimes the right chemicals are not being used. For example, if the raw chicken is on a table, that table must be sanitized. Not cleaned, sanitized. Soap and water aren’t doing the trick. Kitchens are often called out for improper cleaning procedures.

Cross-Contamination

This is gross, just on principle. Unfortunately, according to Lennix, it happens with a frequency that’s alarming. Cutting raw meat before cutting raw vegetables is cross-contamination. Cross-contamination also occurs when that chicken bacteria isn’t properly sanitized off the table. Cross contamination is usually due to negligence and laziness. It’s a simple, easy mistake, that could have dire consequences.

Temperature

Another disgusting common kitchen citation is allowing food to reach an unsafe temperature. Food is stored in the refrigerator or freezer to keep bacteria from growing. The warmer something is, the more bacteria copulate. Mold is a visual fungus. Yet, most bacteria isn't so obvious. That’s why there are specific temperature restrictions on food. When storing, food must remain at a specifically low temperature. While heating, to cook the food enough, it must reach a certain internal temperature. This is basic food preparation, Yet, there are plenty of kitchens that do not abide by these rules. Again, their laziness could eventually cause someone to become sick, or even perish.

To close, Frank Lennix finds these easy health code violations appalling. While not every restaurant or kitchen is like this, there is a surprising number that are. Lennix urges people to remember this next time they sit down at a restaurant. Health departments are citing restaurants daily as a result.

Ensuring Good Posture Through Chiropractic Practices with Scott P. Zack

Having good posture is crucial for good health, and having poor posture can lead to different health difficulties.

SARASOTA, FL, UNITED STATES, July 30, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — It’s no secret that many people suffer from back problems. Whether it’s due to heavy lifting or working long, sedentary hours in an office, it’s estimated that as many as 80 percent of Americans will experience some form of lower back pain in their lives. And while it’s easy to attribute this to lack of exercise or spending too much time in front of the computer, another often overlooked cause lies much closer to home: a person’s posture.

Why Posture is Important

There are myriad benefits why having good posture is important, aside from the obvious aesthetic ones of not looking hunched. Other such health benefits include:

-Maintaining the correct alignment of bones and joints
-Reducing stress on ligaments
-Easing strain on muscles, thereby preventing overuse and wear
-Decreasing of joint wear and tear, such as in the knees

Bad posture can also lead to constant pain in your back, which can have psychological implications and lead to depression and loss of confidence.

Can a Chiropractor Help?

“The answer is a resounding yes”, says Scott P. Zack. Qualified professionals have found that through chiropractic adjustments, poor posture can be corrected and effectively treated. If a body has a seriously noticeable postural imbalance, for example, a chiropractor can, using their expertise, correct the incorrect way in which a person’s posture is slanting, thus decreasing pain and relieving pressure on the body.

What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is the manipulation of the body’s joints, performed gently in a precise area by a trained practitioner. “It’s imperative that only extremely qualified doctors are employed,” explains Scott Zack. “As injury can easily occur if the practitioner in question does not know what they’re doing.” he points out.

During a chiropractic adjustment, a patient will lie in a neutral position while the chiropractor manipulates the body to induce movement in afflicted joints. It’s often a very relaxing experience, accompanied by gentle popping sounds, not unlike those heard when someone cracks their knuckles. Scott P. Zack says “If you feel as though you may need a chiropractor, get in contact with trustworthy and trained professionals, and make a booking for a consultation.”

A ‘SEA’lebration! The SEA Lab Marks the End of the 20 Year Celebration with A Special Event.

A Corpsmember shows young students the touch tanks.

Beloved local aquarium hosts a commemorative family-friendly celebration on Sunday, August 12 from 10:00AM-4:00PM.

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA, July 30, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ —
Redondo Beach, California——July 2018 —— The SEA Lab, a program of the LA Conservation Corps will culminate the end of the 20 year ‘SEA’lebration on Sunday, August 12. There will be carnival games, touch tanks, kayaking adventures and tasty treats beginning at 10:00AM and running through 4:00PM. With a unique relationship with local power plants as well as the government organization, the Department of Fish and Wildlife, the organization has rescued and rehabilitated thousands of marine animals and used them to educate local students from various schools in the area.

Based on the border of Hermosa and Redondo Beach and located at 1021 N Harbor Drive in Redondo Beach, CA 90277 , the beloved local attraction has rescued thousands of marine animals in a wide array of species including: sea horses, moon jellies, octopus, halibut, sharks, sea bass and many more.

The SEA Lab Director, Maria Madrigal was one of the first people hired at the aquarium and has served in numerous roles before her most recent appointment states: “It’s been wonderful to observe the transformation from a rustic, bare-bones structure to the facility it is today. I’ve observed children I taught in grade school and watched them grow into our high school volunteers and some have become corpsmembers. I’ve witnessed injured marine life get rescued and recover to thriving animals.”

Occupying and rehabbing a once faded building has been a 20-year transformation with SEA Lab picking up multiple beautification awards. The once barely-noticed aquarium now greets nearly 20,000 students and families each year and has become a local tourist attraction for beach-goers and tourists.
